What's @ Wehr?
What’s @ Wehr in Summer
There’s something transporting about walking through the summer prairie. The unhindered breezes wave tall grasses, butterflies of startling color combinations flit over wide patches of lavender, or cobalt blue accented by periscopes of yellow and seeds of prairie grasses hang on delicate stems while miniature copper capsules hold their precious cargo until just the right moment. It’s not so difficult to imagine what it was like for Laura Ingalls Wilder, hiking among the flowers near her “little house”.
The trails near Mallard Lake also offer a refreshing respite. Listen for the croak of a bullfrog as you stroll near the water’s edge in search of sun-bathing turtles and soak in the color of wetland inhabitants with curious names like turtlehead, Joe Pye weed, or sneezeweed.
Walking through the woodland feels more like a secret treasure hunt in summer. This shaded, quiet realm holds surprises of colorful fungus and reluctant Indian pipe. You’ll come upon patches of soft green moss along the trail and pass by trees offering “apartments available” for nesters and cavity dwellers.
You can’t go wrong in summer at Wehr. The inviting trails are just the place to sluff off the stress, find a place of peace, and feel once again that sense of belonging to nature.
